The Nature and Appeal of Pointillism Tattoos

Pointillism tattoos rely entirely on dots: no outlines, no solid shading, just thousands of individual dots placed in varying densities to produce depth, shadow, and form. This method is modeled on the painting technique of Georges Seurat from the 1880s, but on skin the outcome is something altogether different, something alive. We've tattooed thousands of these. Here's what sets them apart.

A traditional tattoo employs solid lines to delineate the form. Pointillism forgoes these lines altogether. Instead, your artist will cluster dots closely in darker parts of the image and spread them out as things fade into lighter shades. Up close, you'll see each individual dot. Step away and the image coalesces; it works every time like a little miracle.

Our clients will frequently come in, mistaking pointillism tattoos for stippling. They are not. Stippling is a single tactic available to dot work. Pointillism in a tattoo, however, is built entirely from dots. We tattoo geometric mandalas, hyper-real portraits, plants and flowers, sacred geometry, the list goes on. The possibilities are limitless. Just last month we placed a full desert scene on a woman's forearm, near the Arts District. There were no lines; just dots in varying densities to make the saguaros, mountains, and a setting sun. It was like a photo rendered in sand.

So what is the advantage to pointillism compared to other styles? Texture. Pointillism tattoos have a softness that you can't achieve with lines. These tattoos age well, because you're not drawing hard edges that will blur over time. A dot-work technique disperses ink so that the pigment doesn't expand and blur quite the way it can with a solid fill. That's important, 10 years from now.

Also, they're quiet. They don't need to scream. Sometimes a tattoo is something quiet, contemplative, meditative. These tattoos command you to step closer to see the detail. That's the desired reaction.

Is this a first tattoo? If so, dot work tattoos are great for that, too. It feels more comfortable than outlining. Most of our clients will say that. It's not without pain, but it's not as painful as a solid lining piece would be for some people. The results are sophisticated, not heavy. You don't feel like you are committed to a big, solid piece of black work on your arm, but a tattoo that feels like it breathes with your skin.

Great Subject Matter and Design Ideas for Dot Work Tattoos

Not all imagery suits dot work well. It is what it is. Certain designs practically beg to have dot work applied to them while others do not. After years of doing pointillism in Las Vegas exactly which ones fit and which ones don't.

Geometry is king with pointillism. This includes sacred geometry, mandalas, honeycomb, any pattern really. The dots will create perfect gradients that make the form look almost 3-dimensional when it is applied to the skin. We do a ton of those, especially with clients that are from the Arts District and have a visual aesthetic towards them.

Another large one is flora, so roses, peonies, wildflower bouquets. Just that soft gradation you can get with the dot-work makes the petals look soft and dreamy and almost like watercolor, which is not something a lot of linework really does.

Portraiture, you can do it, it's just a little advanced in our book because now you're drawing a human face literally by putting thousands and thousands and thousands of dots. That takes a little more patience on both sides, both of your patience, the client, the artist. We have done beautiful ones before. Animal portraits, especially. We like to do owls, wolves, big cats. We like lions, things like that, just because the fur and the feathers in particular really work well for the technique.

Also just things that some people don't necessarily think about. The pointillism technique lends itself well to astronomical pieces. If you think about it, the stars and constellations and just general stargazing and what the night sky looks like, the dots are already there in there with just light in dark. We often get pieces on the moon phases, the constellations, even pieces inspired by the Milky Way. It just, for us, makes a lot of sense. And of course, we see a lot of the desert sky themes, too, because those pieces work well with pointillism as well. Just, you know, skulls, flora, botanical, a lot of abstract art. Those also work.

The thing that doesn't really work is things with a lot of bold line or bold solid coloring. You're in that gray space, the grays and the transitions and stuff, and it's not for everyone because if you are looking for something with a ton of solid black line, heavy bold saturated fills, a different style is going to do you much better. But if you want something delicate, layered, mesmerizing, then nine times out of ten we can do it with the dot work.

How to Get Ready for a Pointillism Tattoo Appointment

Okay, so you've made your appointment. What now? Some preparation is helpful for dot work, and much of it is pretty easy to do.

Number one, get a good night's rest. It sounds obvious, but since dot work generally takes longer than traditional line work, because we are building up the density dot by dot, you're going to feel it much better on your body when you are well rested. It's amazing how it can really make that difference when the client is sleeping more, is sitting longer and is feeling good during the entire process, their skin takes the ink better.

Second, make sure you are fed before your appointment. I'm talking about a meal, not a granola bar you bought at the gas station off of Las Vegas Boulevard. If you want to come in, have a proper breakfast or lunch. We would really like you to eat some meat. We'd like your blood sugar level to be normal going into the appointment, so we're not trying to worry about someone feeling lightheaded.

Also, hydrate. I mean, hydrate well for at least a couple of days prior. Just make sure your body is full of water, drink more water than you think you need to. That's going to make a difference on how well your skin takes the ink, and since we're putting dots on dots, it's just going to make it much easier if the skin is full and hydrated. Dry, dehydrated skin sometimes is harder to work with and sometimes the dots don't stay as crisp.

No sunburn. If you're out hiking at Red Rock, going down by the pool at Summerlin, just make sure the area to be tattooed is covered or you have sunscreen on it. You really want that area to have at least two weeks of protection before the appointment. If your skin is sunburned or in the process of peeling, we'll have to reschedule. Trust me, no one wants that.

Dress comfortably with easy access to the area you want to tattoo. We recommend something loose; you'll be in one position for a while, so wear something comfortable rather than trendy. You may bring headphones if music calms you, and some customers bring snacks or a drink with a lid. We play vinyl in the shop and have a laid-back vibe, but sometimes bringing your own playlist is a great idea to help get through long periods of dots.

Another thing that is often forgotten is to moisturize the area lightly the week before your appointment day, not the day itself. The more supple and healthy the skin, the more beautiful the final result will be. However, if you come in with a fresh coat of lotion, we will not be able to get the stencil to stick. We prefer to answer questions over the phone before you arrive.

What happens during a Pointillism tattoo appointment at Love Bite Tattoo? First of all, we want you to feel relaxed when you arrive at our studio. There are music players, retro furnishings, and maybe a rescue cat strolling in and around your legs – we want you to feel at ease before we pick up a tattoo gun.

We will first review the custom design with you to make sure that we're 100% satisfied with the design. Even though we will have already sent you the digital proof design to confirm the design at home, it is a whole other experience to see the tattoo design printed on paper in its actual size. This is when we decide on the tattoo spot, the size, and if the design has been placed correctly on your skin. It is imperative that the design is placed correctly for a Pointillism tattoo design. The dots may not form in the correct way if the design isn't laid out exactly as it is on the drawing. We take time to measure and re-measure the tattoo design on your skin to the tattoo is going to look correct. Then we prep your skin, and then we place the stencil on your body. It may take as long as twenty minutes to stencil a tattoo, depending on the complexity of the design. We will never rush the stencil process for you.

Once you are relaxed and the stencil is in the right spot, we then start tattooing with a Pointillism technique. You will find that it is a very different sensation from traditional tattoos. The gun will make quick motions, and you will not experience the long strokes like traditional tattoos. Many tattoo clients here in Las Vegas have said that the tattooing with the dot tattoo technique was easier than they thought; it is also not as much a sensation on fleshier parts of the body (think outer arm or thigh). Some of our clients located around the Arts District have said that they could sit comfortably through a three-hour session, whereas others can only do 90 minutes. Both are perfectly fine with us.

We build up layers of dots to create the tattoo, where the darkest areas of the design have the greatest concentration of dots and then gradually build the image outwards into lighter areas. We work at a measured and steady pace, one that we've perfected over thousands of tattoo sessions. There's no way to accelerate pointillism without ruining the spacing. We take breaks as needed. Water, food, a short stroll. No deadlines. When the session is done, we'll take care of the piece, photograph it for both of us, and then guide you through aftercare in detail. There are no mysteries left. You'll know exactly what to do and when.

Aftercare Instructions That Protect Pointillism Tattoos

Here's what most people aren't aware of. Your pointillism tattoo lives or dies during the first couple of weeks it's healing. Each and every dot on your body has to find its way cleanly into the skin. If you rush aftercare or don't follow each step, those crisp little dots can smear into an unclean mess. We've watched that happen, and it breaks our hearts every single time.

So we'll make this easy. Keep the bandage on for the amount of time we specify. Often that's a couple of hours, or sometimes longer if we've applied a medical wrap. Don't take it off early. Your skin requires that time covered to begin healing properly.

When we remove the bandage, wash gently with lukewarm water and a fragrance-free cleanser. Dry it with a soft pat. No rubbing! Fresh dots can't handle it. For a week or so, put a slim coat of unscented moisturizer two or three times daily. Thin means thin. We are not icing a cake. An overabundance of aftercare product can block the pores and may even wash the ink away before the tattoo properly heals. We provide every Las Vegas client with a printed handout because most folks can't retain verbal instructions when we're admiring their tattoo. That handout goes on the fridge, not in the wallet.

Don't put the tattoo in the sun for three or more weeks. If you are near Fremont East or spending Saturday in Summerlin, once your tattoo has healed, your best friend is sunscreen. Sunlight is the leading cause of premature fading of your tattoo, as the American Academy of Dermatology has pointed out. Your dots contain a lighter amount of ink than any solid line design, so UV damage does a heavier number on them.

No swimming. No hot tubs. No taking a full bath. Las Vegas has pools in every direction; we recognize that. But immersing a fresh tattoo can allow in bacteria and will damage the healing skin. Short showers only.

It will itch. It will scab. Do not scratch it. Do not pick at it. Allow all scabs to shed independently. We guarantee that 90 percent of clients who do everything by the book will have tattoos that still look incredibly crisp many years later. The others?
